Hello to "old timers" still living in Perryton.  I was born in Perryton, my mother (Sammie J. Black) was raised there.  Her parents (Marge and Orville Black) were the first residents of Perryton (although the history books don't record it).  My beloved mother passed away suddenly on June 20, 2005.  We had planned to be in Perryton for her high school class reunion (Mother so wanted to attend one before the end of her life; she was Validictorian in 1940); unfortunately she didn't get that opportunity.  I have lived my whole life hearing about the times she spent growing up in Perryton and about the families she knew when it was a much smaller town.  I cherish my visits as a child and the stories Mother told.  If anyone reading this knew my

Hello Perryton.
It's been many years since I have laid eyes on the Panhandle Of Texas. I left Perryton in 1984, after living there for two years. The oil field boom brought Me there , and when OPEC stopped the drilling I moved back home here to Roseburg Oregon.
I would like to hear from anyone who worked for Lloyd Jones Drilling back in that time. My drillers name was C.O. Crowley. He had two sons one of which did work the rigs then. I had a friend by the name Irene L'Esperance. She worked at one of the small markets at the time.
I look forward to hearing from anyone who lived there then.    Mike Oglesby....Roseburg Oregon

The class reunion was a lot of fun this year.  It was so good to see all the old class mates that I hadn't seen since graduation (1986).  I was disappointed that the class mates that still live in Perryton didn't come to any of the events for the reunion.  Please try to come to the next one.  Just because you still live in Perryton doesn't mean we wouldn't like to see you.  We don't get to bump into you from time to time because we don't come home all that often.  You really missed out on a lot of fun!

WOW! I cant believe that this is the place that i grew up.  Even more than that, i cant believe how much i love the memories and friends from this place. I've been all over,  and have come to the realization that people can think what they want about perryton, but everyone has to agree that there isnt another place like it.
Hello to all of the people i have neglected to stay in touch with.......

My dad's family came from Perryton! I believe they owned a mercantile store there around 1920 or so. My dad was a cousin to T.J. Lovett and Jack Lovett which I understand that there is family still living there. I have never been to Perryton but have heard alot about the town.

I have never been to Perryton but my family was from there. I understand my grandfather was in the mercantile business there in the early 1900's. My dad was born at Guymon, just across the state line in Oklahoma. The Lovett family is a part of the McLarty family. T.J. and Jack were my dads cousins. I am told that there is still family there, would love to hear from someone!

I'm trying to research my family tree. Unfortunately both my mother and father are very tight lipped about their family histories. I do know that my great-great grandfather was Mayor of Booker Texas per my mother. I assume his last name was Burchette as that was my Grandmother's maiden name. Can someone help me out with what his full name is, and any other information no matter how minute? i'm desperate for info. I'm the only one in my family who gives a damn about our past, and I've been searching and searching the web for answers to no avail.

:-), Thanks, Valerie L. Van Lewen

I live in east Texas, and have only been to Perryton once in my life.   It's a very beautiful place on the high plains of Texas.   I must say Perryton is one of my favorite towns in the panhandle.   I listen to KEYE Radio each morning via the Internet.   I don't know anyone from the Perryton/Ochiltree area, but it seems like the entire county is full of very nice folks.

If I ever decide to leave my native east Texas, Perryton would be a place I would love to live.   Because I'm not from that area of Texas, it doesn't look like Texas to me, but I feel I could adjust to the high plains just fine.  And to the folks of Perryton, you have a friend here in east Texas.

I lived in Perryton as "the new kid" from the time I started 2nd grade until I moved around the 6th grade.  During the years, my family made a few visits back to visit friends and family.  The Slaughters (Kenny and Jeannie) are my brother-in-law's parents, and Jeannie and Jerry Garner were the parents of my old friend Justin.  I knew other folks like Lori Brillhart and Mandy Morgan...
Ahh...youth.  I have been trying to contact Mandy and Justin but they've disappeared.  It'd be pretty nice to get an e-mail from them some time.

Anyway, Perryton is an excellent place to raise a family.  It's not big and scary and I don't think we ever locked our doors at night.  There were tons of things to do.  I would go to the library, the swimming pool, ride bikes in the fields, watch helicopters land at the hospital... not much now, but it seemed pretty cool back then.

I admire the folks who have remained in Perryton and can call it "home."

Jen

Comments:

Oh, my.  I do have to say I was simply searching for the Perryton newspaper, too, and came across this site instead.  I saw Mandy Morgan wrote "GO SHERYL!" back in 1998.  Apparently, the e-mail address no longer works.  What a flippin' bummer!
Somebody did mention the Dixie Dog and I agree--there should be a franchise.  Start in Cincinnati, OH where I am living currently and then work your way west to Topeka, KS where I did a lot of other growing up, so, I visit there every few months.
It's sad to see so many people had negative comments about Perryton, but everybody has an opinion.  For some, I'm sorry it wasn't a great experience for you.  I enjoyed it. I loved Take-a-Taco (spelling?) and the Watering Hole's giant waffle-coned yogurt... dragging main with my big sister, Valerie, when we were supposed to be at home instead.  Stopping in at the Sonic for a cherry soda and hanging on for dear life to the back of Brandon's and Chance's pick-up truck...good times.
Ok I'm done remembering stuff now. ha

I had LOTS of fun growing up there and miss lots of people whom I have lost contact with... If anyone see's me on here that's curious, please contact me, I would love to hear from you! For everyone who blames Perryton for their problems, problems can happen anywhere, not just in a small town!! If you don't like it, leave, you just may end up back in Perryton or very near after some amount of time... I lived in Dallas for about 9 years and am now back in Pampa raising two little boys and married - yes, I have finally settled down!! :o) Ya'll be good in Perryton!! Brandi

I was just reading through the comments and I am shocked at how people are trashing Perryton, I was born and raised there and although I left when I was 15, Perryton will always be "home". I just think people need to grow up and let go of the past. Perryton is NOT the worst place to live. I had some good times and bad times in Perryton as everyone does but, I would never blame PERRYTON or the people of Perryton. Just wanted to say, GET OVER IT PEOPLE!!

I have 3 sons and 1 grandson. My middle son is in Iraq with the 163 INF, Missoula, MT (NG) attached to the 1st Inf Div (Big Red One). He's the best shot in the outfit just like his old man. Isn't it funny that the order you get, the more you think about when you were younger? I graduated in 1971 and as much as I hated it then, I miss it now. I think about moving back sometimes---who knows---maybe some day. I guess you could say that a big chunk of Texas lives in Illinois. Great pictures of the recent ice storm on KEYE web site. I lived right down the street from the Bryans. I hope you all are having great lives.

Good web site. As a former Perryton resident, I am glad to see such a good web site. I worked for FirstBank Southwest in Amarillo before I had my Stroke. I am now recouperating in Muleshoe where I grew up. I was a member of the First United Church and Scoutmaster of their Scout Troop. Please say hi to Doug Hale and Don Dyer at PNB as well as Randy Brillhart, and Claudia Barton, and Treva Custer at FirstBank Southwest Perryton. Perryton is a great place to raise a family, but somewhat lacking in activities for single people. Mike Jones

I can only imagine the people that are saying such "wonderful" things about Perryton have never been verbally "attacked" by the people who are supposed to "care about you and be sooo honest." Watch out - they will turn on you faster than anything, especially when you show the first sign of a weakness...And when people try to bring you down by spreading hurtful rumors around town, they thrive on the fact that they have hurt you. Now, since being gone, I have realized the TRUE meaning of friendships. Having a husband and children of my own,I cannot imagine them growing up in such a back-stabbing place as this town is. Fortunately, they will never have to experience the 2-faced people I've had to deal with. The only regret I have is not being able to say these things to the faces of the so-called "human beings" that tried to bring me down - believe me, if I could, I would. I am now a 27 year old grown woman with a family of my own, and no one in that town intimidates me anymore. I'm not, at all, angry or upset...I actually pity y'all. I do still have some very close friends that are from Perryton, but they are few and far between. To them, I say Thank You. Thank you for not letting that town change you.
